But does a rehabilitated waterway contribute to this? Our work is predicated on the notion that regenerating the Jukskei River can create green jobs. And in turn, innovative green technologies can stimulate socio-economic opportunities. The river environment is a potential source of income for local and neighbouring communities, most visibly by creating accessible spaces that were once overgrown and neglected. The canal is undersized for existing rainfall events, and storm water routinely overcomes barriers of the culvert, leading to a frequent flooding of roads and housing with water and sediment. Downstream, the river is highly polluted, indicating that the existing system does not improve water quality of surface flows prior to discharge but rather mobilises and transports pollutants to the river. This work culminated in a co-designed ‘Eco tree seat’ bioswale built in May 2019 on the corner of Viljoen and Victoria Streets in Lorentzville. It was built by a local Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) service provider and helps to prevent flooding. Alongside rituals and customs, these plants foster a holistic recovery. But unsustainable harvesting from the wild has impacted how healers access these plants. Provincial authorities estimate a minimum decline of 30% nationally over the past 30 years (ref). Decreases in the number of locally-sourced plants available in the muthi markets has also been noted (ref).
